  • SPARD Africa is scaling up its fodder enterprise in Makueni and Taita Taveta with support from the Kenya Feed the Future – Crops and Dairy Market Systems Development project. Under the leadership of Director of Programs, the Extension and Market Development Officer will be responsible for providing technical input and coordinating all functions related to production and marketing of fodder for SPARD Africa’s new scale up program in Makueni and Taita Taveta Counties. The officer will also be responsible for mobilization and recruitment of farmers and establishment of SPARD Africa’s fodder out grower model. He / She will also support market development by coordinating the engagement of dairy farmers through trainings and interventions to address bottlenecks limiting uptake of quality feeds and feeding practices, establishment of marketing channels and continuously monitoring quality of fodder in the farms and aggregation centers.

    Job Description
    A. Establishment of the Out-grower Model
    • Recruitment and capacity building of Community Based Facilitators (CBF)in both the supply and demand ends of the fodder market system
    • Mobilization and recruitment of out grower farmers in Taita Taveta
    • Coordinate the delivery of trainings to the out growers and continuously provide technical backstopping to ensure farmers apply the right practices in fodder production, post-harvest handling and storage.
    • Aggregate the demand for mechanization services among the out growers and liaise with the operations team to provide the services to the out growers
    • Regular monitoring quality of hay in the farms and in store and provide guidance on how to address any emerging issues
    • Continued engagement with the out growers addressing any challenge in production and to ensure that the production is aligned to the market needs

    B. Fodder Market Development:
    • Coordinate delivery of trainings to the farmers in the demand end, with the aim of addressing bottlenecks that limit uptake of commercial dairy and fodder production
    • Coordinate the marketing of fodder through partnership with dairy cooperatives, agro vets and CBF as grassroots agents
    • Support the CBF to package their services in order to become the service providers at both demand and supply ends of the market system
    • Continuously monitor the market dynamics and the business environment, addressing any issues raised by the producers and ensuring production is aligned with market needs
    • Establish the distribution channels and satellite stores for hay, which include partnership with cooperatives, agro vets and supporting establishment of a network of CBF as grassroots agents.
    • Supporting the small-scale dairy farmers to aggregate demand and link them to our agents
    • Analyzing competition in order to plan for the business to remain competitive in the market place

    C. Partnerships, Collaboration and Other support services in the demand and supply ends
    • Identify potential input suppliers and facilitate tripartite agreements between SPARD Africa, service providers and farmers
    • Facilitate linkages with other stakeholders in the two counties including the county government extension staff, the dairy cooperatives, ranchers, input suppliers, NGOs etc.
    • Collaboration with KCDMS project staff and partners in Taita Taveta Counties
    • Representing SPARD Africa in the business to business meetings and all forums in the county
    • Coordinate linkage to finance service providers including formation of Savings and Credit Schemes among beneficiary farmers to enhance their ability to acquire production inputs

    D. Monitoring and Reporting
    • Develop and implement robust production and marketing monitoring indicators regularly monitor these parameters among the farmers
    • Generating monthly and quarterly reports as required
    • Any other tasks assigned by the management


    A. Minimum Requirements:
    Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in animal production or other related field, three (3) years’ experience in either dairy and fodder production, agribusiness especially marketing OR a diploma in animal production or related field with more than 5 years of proven experience in provision of extension services in dairy and fodder production.
    B. Preferred Requirements:
    a) Demonstrated experience in setting robust and sustainable extension systems for small scale farmers
    b) Demonstrated experience in farmer mobilization and formation of group savings and credit schemes
    c) Significant experience in facilitating market linkages and market development among smallholder farmers
    d) Experience and knowledge in best practices for fodder production and post-harvest handling

    C. Most Critical Proficiencies:
    a) Clear understanding of smallholder dairy and fodder production systems in the semi-arid context
    b) Experience in delivering extension services to small scale farmers using community-based approaches
    c) Innovative, analytical, and solutions oriented.
    d) Strong farmer mobilization skills.
    e) Demonstrated ability to design and implement strategies aimed at providing institutional capacity and market linkages
    f) Knowledge of income and expense budget preparation and monitoring.
    g) Demonstrated knowledge of the latest developments in advancing good/best practices in dairy and fodder productivity improvement that reaches women, youth, and other vulnerable groups in the society.
    h) Excellent organizational skills.
    i) Proficient knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, presentation tools, electronic mail (Microsoft Office preferred) and Internet.
    j) Knowledge of and experience with developing private/public partnerships at the county level.
    k) Demonstrated proficiency in English and other local languages, both oral and written.
